Why You’ll Love This Espresso Spritz

I think we’re all on the espresso martini train now (I have a non-alcoholic espresso martini recipe too!) but this summer we’re switching things up! We’re taking the best parts of an espresso martini and the best parts of a spritz and putting them together to create the Espresso Spritz!

Think of the martini version as an introvert and the spritz as an extrovert – it’s the perfect energy for summer, right?! This cocktail is full of rich espresso, bubbly prosecco, and some sparkling water and coffee liqueur to really drive it home.

Whether you’re sipping on this spritz at brunch, or all night long for a little caffeine boost, you’re going to love it!

Ingredients

prosecco, Pellegrino, orange, lime, coffee liqueur, and glasses set out to make a spritz

Just a few ingredients to make this simple – but strong! – spritz!

  • Freshly brewed espresso – cooled
  • Coffee liqueur – like Kahlua
  • Simple syrup – for sweetness
  • Prosecco
  • Sparkling water
  • Orange wedge – for garnish, optional

Ingredient Tip: Temperature Matters!

  • You don’t want to shock the espresso by immediately pouring it over ice, so let it cool for a bit before starting to make your drink.
  • Allow the seltzer and prosecco to come to room temperature. If they’re icy cold and you pour them over the espresso it’ll shock it.
  • The only extreme temperature that should be involved is ice! Otherwise, everything should be around room temperature.

How To Make an Espresso Spritz

Add liqueur and stir it together with espresso and ice

Fill a wine glass (or large coupe or lowball glass) with ice. Pour the cooled espresso on top, followed by the coffee liqueur and simple syrup. Stir everything together gently.

Top the drink with prosecco and sparkling water and stir it together once more. Garnish with an orange wedge if you’d like and enjoy!

FAQs

What is espresso with sparkling water called?

There is a drink that’s just espresso mixed with sparkling water an it’s a drink known by many names! Sparkling espresso, spritzy Americana, or espressoda are a few. This drink is alcohol-free and enjoyed by many first thing in the morning or as a bubbly afternoon pick-me-up. Italians also enjoy espresso alongside a separate glass of soda water to cleanse their palate between sips.

What alcohol goes well with espresso?

Generally, I think a creamy liqueur goes great with an espresso because it mimics a coffee with cream. Dark alcohol like whiskey or brandy is also a natural choice and flavor match for the espresso.

Espresso Spritz Serving Suggestions

You can drink this cocktail whenever you want, but in my head, it’s either a brunch or an evening-late night drink. That means there are two different kinds of foods you can pair it with: breakfast vibes, or late-night snackies!
